Send the troops in, says Tokyo Governor
From Richard Lloyd Parry in Tokyo
JAPAN’S most popular nationalist politician said yesterday that the Government should send troops to the disputed Senkaku Islands and blast any Chinese or North Korean intruders who approach them.
Shintaro Ishihara, in remarks that will further stir anti- Japanese feeling in China, also criticised Junichiro Koizumi, the Japanese Prime Minister, for his apology last week for Japan’s wartime aggression and predicted that China will shortly suffer a political disintegration.
Mr Ishihara was named in a newspaper poll two days ago as the politician most favoured to be the next prime minister, with twice the support of Mr Koizumi. Although his position as Governor of Tokyo makes this unlikely, he is an influential, though extreme, voice.
Mr Ishihara said: “We should send our military there and if Chinese activists or North Korean agents intrude and don’t listen to orders to stop, then we should sink them.”
He accused the Chinese Government of encouraging hatred for Japan as a safety valve for reducing frustration that otherwise would be directed towards itself. “There’s this energy that’s building up like magma and they want to divert it,” Mr Ishihara said. China “will disintegrate into about six nations in the not-too-distant future”.
Yesterday, 1,000 plaintiffs, including Japanese, Chinese and Koreans, lost a civil suit that they had brought in a Tokyo court seeking damages for distress caused by Mr Koizumi’s visits to the nationalist Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo, where Japan’s war dead are worshipped as Shinto deities.
